Face Shields for Kids

Face shields for kidsTo help control the spread of COVID-19, the CDC has recommended that everyone wear masks where possible. However, it can be challenging to convince children to wear face masks. Many parents are now turning to face shields for kids, as this is an excellent option for children who struggle to wear standard face masks. Face shields cover the child’s entire face, making it more challenging for them to touch their nose, mouth, and eyes.

Whenever possible, it is still most beneficial to wear both a face shield and a mask. For children who cannot tolerate masks however, face shields offer an ideal alternative.

The Pros of Face Shields

Kids’ face shields have a range of benefits. Children will often find the design more comfortable than masks, as it does not directly touch the face but rather is secured on the head with headbands. As they are designed from clear material, face shields also make it easier for children to communicate with others, particularly in school settings. Although they are beneficial for anyone, face shields are particularly useful for kids who have learning disorders or special needs, or who are deaf.

Additionally, face shields for kids have the added benefit of creating a barrier over the upper half of the face, thus preventing respiratory droplets from entering the body through the child’s eyes. This is a significant benefit when compared to face masks. Parents are also able to easily wash face shields so their children can wear them again.

The Cons of Face Shields

While face masks serve an important role in protecting both the self and others, face shields only protect the wearer. Face shields sit in front of the face, not snugly against the skin. As such, face shields allow particles to spread more widely when the child does any of the following:

  • Sneezes
  • Exhales
  • Coughs
  • Speaks

As masks will cover the nose and mouth, they do a better job of preventing the spread of these particles. Kids’ face shields are most effective if the child wears a mask in addition to the face shield.

When Kids Might Use Face Shields

There are several scenarios where a child may use a face shield rather than a mask:

  • The child is unable to wear a face mask
  • The child is eating
  • The child is playing outdoors
  • The child has sensory issues
  • The child is deaf or hard of hearing

How to Wear a Face Shield

For children who struggle to wear face masks, the CDC recommends wearing a face shield that fully wraps around both sides of the face and extends past the chin. Before putting on their face shield, the child should wash or sanitize their hands. The parent or child should also always clean the face shield between every use, either by wiping it with a disinfectant cloth or cleaning it with water/alcohol. Before the child puts the face shield on, it should be completely dry.
